Innovative (bio)technologies for marine monitoring and explorations: Internet of Underwater Things
20 September, 9:00 - 11:10
Chair Gianluca Sarà:
- 09:00 – 09:50 Invited talk Chiara Petrioli (Founder and CEO, WSense srl) “Enabling Ocean Big Data by means of the Internet of Underwater Things”
Underwater robotics and the Internet of Underwater Things, including innovation on sensing technologies, are providing a technological revolution in the Blue Economy which is enabling unprecedented Ocean Big Data, from the water column, in real time, significantly extending current underwater monitoring infrastructures and optimising large scale Earth Observation systems traditionally based on satellite observation. Emerging subsea networks also allow scientists to get data in real time and to implement early warning systems.
The talk will cover state of the art of innovation on Internet of Underwater Things technologies, future trends and discuss results of multidisciplinary projects where these technologies have been applied for ocean health and biodiversity monitoring in the last three years. - 09:50 – 10:00 Speaker: John A. Gittings “Remotely Sensing Phytoplankton Size Structure in the Mediterranean Sea: Insights from In Situ Data and Temperature-Corrected Abundance-Based Models.”
Authors: J. A. Gittings, E. Livanou, X. Sun, R. J. W. Brewin, S. Psarra, M. Mandalakis, D. E. Raitsos. - 10:00 – 10:10 Speaker: Joachim Langeneck “Biological and functional diversity of marine annelids as inspiration for innovative soft robots.”
Authors: J. Langeneck, L. Paternò, K. Keklikoglou, E. Vernadou, R. Rinaldi, M. Cascione, J. Quaglierini, A. De Simone, A. Menciassi, L. Musco. - 10:10 – 11:10 Coffee Break
