Ocean solutions for Nature and people (Chair Simonetta Fraschetti)

18 September, 8:30 - 11:10

  • 08:30 – 09:20 Invited talk: Fiorenza Micheli (Stanford University, USA) “Resilience and vulnerability of coastal social-ecological systems to global shocks”
Coastal ecosystems and communities are threatened worldwide by climate change, and shocks from social, market and political change. There is an urgent global need to promote resilient social-ecological systems in the face of change. Small-scale fisheries in rural settings can be particularly vulnerable as they frequently lack the resources, rights and infrastructure to respond to shocks originating outside the focal systems. I will present insights from two decades of interdisciplinary, participatory research Baja California, Mexico, and will discuss transferability and generality of approaches and results towards understanding and supporting resilience.
